Identity, or one’s sense of self, is one of Satan’s favorite areas of life to target. He loves to twist your perception of yourself until you see yourself as so messed up that you believe nothing positive could ever come from your life; his goal is to distract you from who God has created you to be.
But Satan is a liar (more on that here) and today I am going to share the truth of “Who Does God Say I Am?”
You Are In God’s Image
Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Satan may try to convince you that you are a mistake; that you are completely messed up and can never be fixed. He may tell you you’re worthless, useless, etc. This could not be further from the truth! God literally created you in his image and because of this, you are able to reflect God’s character, His love, patience, forgiveness, kindness, etc.
You Are Chosen
1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
You are God’s chosen! God could have chosen any species (both on the earth and not on the earth) to call to be His children and yet HE CHOSE YOU! Think about that! Our God is all knowing which means he knew every mistake, every sin, every mess up you would make before you even came into existence and He still chose you! This means there is nothing you can do that he won’t forgive, no sin you could commit that His grace will not cover.
You Are Forgiven
Ephesians 1:7, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”
You are forgiven. Every mistake, every mis-step, every mess up; God will forgive if you ask. Do not let Satan convince you that you have messed up too many times. Jesus died on the cross so that you could be redeemed from all sin; believing that you cannot be forgiven is believing that there is no power in that precious blood He shed.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you can live however you please. Scripture makes it clear that God forgives the repentant soul, meaning those who seek forgiveness and then actively change their behavior so they do not fall into sin again.
You Are Loved
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
You are loved. Let me say it again, YOU are LOVED! When Jesus died on that cross He saw you and He thought of you and He loves you! Never lose sight of this love! Sometimes we get into our head that no one wants; no one loves us. There was one person who loved you so much, even though he knew you would mess up and make mistakes, that he died the most horrific death possible so he could get to know you!
The Bible tells us many, many other things about our identity. It tells us we are powerful, we are redeemed, we are strong, etc. Whenever Satan starts to bombard you with lies about your identity, open your Bible; the lies of the enemy will never be able to stand against the truth of the Savior!
