Criminal profiling is an “investigative tool used by law enforcement agencies to identify likely suspects and analyze patterns that may predict future offenses.” Though criminal profiling is most commonly utilized by the police and the military, today I am going to use it to profile the enemy. That’s right, today I’m profiling the enemyto help you more easily recognize the characteristics of Satan and how he may be working in your life.

Why You Need To Know The Characteristics of Satan

You may be thinking that I’ve lost my mind, but hear me out. I believe Christians as a whole have become desensitized to who Satan really is and how he really operates. Today’s society has painted the picture that the devil is nothing more than a tiny, little, red guy that carries a pitch fork and sits on people’s shoulders telling them to do bad things. Unfortunately, this ideology has lulled many Christians into complacency and they are no longer on guard; this leaves them vulnerable to attack.
I won’t lie, I too was lulled into a false sense of security. I allowed myself to believe that Satan had no effect on my life until I came across the movie War Room. This movie opened my eyes to the fact that there is a war going on in the spiritual realm and I am caught right in the middle of it (as are you.)
Since watching the movie I have felt the pressing need to study up on the enemy, find out who he is and how he works. In other words, profile him. I believe it is vitally important that Christians understand Satan and what he is capable of so that we will not only be prepared for when he strikes (and he will strike), but also be capable of identifying where he is attacking our life.
I’ve been studying the Bible, scrutinizing every scripture I can find about the devil and putting together a profile in order to find where he has planted himself in my life so I can weed him out (P.S. that pun was totally intended!) Let me tell you, I was shocked when I realized how man areas of my life Satan had weaseled himself into. I feel in my heart that God is leading me to share these characteristics of Satan with you so that you can be on guard too!

Characteristic of Satan: He is the ENEMY

Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
The first characteristic of Satan is probably the most obvious point I will make in this post (and unfortunately the one Christians disregard the most). We either dismiss Satan as a tiny, insignificant, powerless being (as I mentioned earlier in the post) or we consider him to be God’s enemy and not our own. As you can see from the verse I shared above, there is a war going on. If Satan really wants to hit God where it will hurt the most there is only one logical action to take: go after His children.
There is no denying that God loves His children. He loves us so much he sent His only begotten Son to die for us on a cross (John 3:16.) He loves us so much that He carefully knit us together in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13) and He breathed His very breath into our lungs to give us life (Genesis 2:7.) God loves us and Satan wants nothing more than to keep us from returning that love.
So be on guard! Satan is your enemy and he is ready to attack.

Characteristic of Satan: He is a liar

John 8:44, “… He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Another characteristic of Satan is that he is not only a liar, but he is the father of lies. One of Satan’s favorite tactics is to fill your head with lies about your own insecurities: No one likes you. You’re not good enough. God could never forgive you for that. You’re a joke. No one will take you seriously. You’re not qualified, you’re too quiet, you’re too loud, you’re not pretty enough, you’re not tall enough, short enough, skinny enough, big enough, etc. If there is one thing Satan is good at, it’s lying and getting God’s children to believe him.
I’ve been there. I’ve had Satan spinning his tales within my mind and I’ve allowed myself to believe them. If you have read my testimony then you know that I let Satan convince me that God could never forgive me for the things I had done; that I deserved to wallow in my guilt and shame. I knew that Satan was the one telling me these things but I told myself, “Maybe there’s some truth to what he’s saying. Maybe he’s right.”
There is NO TRUTH in Satan. He is not capable of telling even the tiniest bit of truth. Every syllable that leaves his mouth is a lie. This means whatever he’s been whispering in your ear is not true, not even a little bit.

Characteristic of Satan: He is a manipulator

2 Corinthians 11:14, “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
Satan is  manipulator; a trickster. His goal is to trick you into think he is something he’s not. Just as he tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit, he is tricking Christians into making choices that go against God’s will and convincing them that it’s fine. It’s okay to have an abortion, the baby isn’t really alive until it’s born. It’s okay to have sex before marriage, just be safe while doing so, it’s okay to dress immodestly, it’s the guys fault if he looks at you in the way and it’s okay to drink a little bit, just don’t drink too much.
Satan also has the habit of making your life a mess and then twisting things around so that you’re blaming the wrong person. He’ll have you blaming God, your husband/boyfriend, your boss, your family, and even yourself while he’s the true culprit. Maybe he has you blaming relationship problems on your boyfriend. Or you’re convinced your teacher is the reason you’re having trouble at school. Perhaps he’s convinced you God didn’t answer your prayers and that’s why you’re so ill.
I guarantee if you do some digging, all of these situations will lead straight back to one being: Satan.

Characteristic of Satan: He is a thief

John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
The third characteristic of Satan is that he’s  a thief. He’s a thief of joy, a thief of peace, a thief of life, a thief of anything that will bring you closer to God. He’ll steal your passion so you won’t be motivated, he’ll take your purpose so you’ll feel useless and he’ll pick away at your faith so all you feel is fear.
I encourage you to take a good look at yourself and see if anything you once had is missing. Don’t worry, whatever Satan has taken from you God can give back and now that you’re on guard, Satan won’t be able to steal from you again.

Characteristic of Satan: He is DEFEATED

Revelation 20:10, “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
The final characteristic of Satan is that he is DEFEATED! Satan’s days are drawing to an end and he will be defeated; something he is entirely aware of. Perhaps, this is why he is fighting so hard to take down every Christian he can. But you don’t have to worry. You’re on God’s team, the winning team!
Hold fast to God and he will hold fast to you.
I sincerely hope that you will take what I shared with you in this post seriously. Satan is real, his threat is real, the war being waged in the heavenly realms is real. Learn who the enemy is and how he operates and weed him out of your life. Warn others about what he is capable of. I keep this profile in my prayer journal and I look at it every day. It’s helpful to remind myself what what I need to look out for. I encourage you to do the same.
I would like to close this post with a prayer:
Father, I pray for each and every person that comes across this post. I pray that you will instill your Word within their heart. Lord, I ask that they will take these characteristics of Satan to heart and not take this threat lightly. Give them the wisdom and strength it takes to stand strong against the devil. Give them the ability to discern what areas of their life Satan is targeting and equip them to fight back. In Jesus’ name, Amen
