Anxiety is rough. It will rob you of all happiness, peace of mind, and joy; it will take captive both your mind and body. I actually endure anxiety myself. About 5 years ago my family lost our house in a fire. Thankfully, my family wasn’t home at the time but the psychological impact this has had on me is huge. Ever since my house burned down I have had severe anxiety of it happening again. There have been several instances where I have had a full panic attack because I thought I smelled smoke and became completely convinced my house was going to burn down. My anxiety for so bad that I rarely left the house because I was sure it would burn down when I left. This, however, is not how God intended you to live. In fact, scripture tells us not to be afraid 365 times! Here is a collection of bible verses that have helped me to overcome anxiety with scripture. If you battle with anxiety I encourage you to study these scriptures, memorize them, and pray them over your life!
Disclaimer: As a crisis/ Christian counselor, I feel compelled to include that if you have an anxiety disorder please do not stop taking your medication or going to counseling unless you first consult your counselor, therapist, etc. I believe 100% that God can heal you of your anxiety and that these scriptures will help you. However, you need to be careful and work out a plan with your counselor before quitting any medications.
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: God is With You Wherever You Go
“Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid of discouraged , for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (CSB)
This is my go to scripture when I’m experiencing anxiety; I repeat it to myself probably 20+ times a day. This verse gives us the beautiful promise that we
don’t have to fear or be discouraged because our God is with us wherever we go. No matter what situation I’m facing, I have full confidence that I am not facing it alone.
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: The Peace of Christ Cannot Be Taken Away
” Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. ” John 14:27 (CSB)
This scripture brings me so much comfort! This is not simply because it speaks of Jesus giving us peace but because it emphasizes the fact that Jesus does not give to us the way the world gives. When people or the world give something to us that something can easily be taken away- it is temporary. When Jesus gives to us it is eternal and everlasting. This means the peace Jesus gives to us CANNOT be taken away! When people or the world give something to us that something can easily be taken away- it is temporary. How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: God is Your Strength
“I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself. I know both how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content- whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance of in need. I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13 (CSB)
This verse may not explicitly refer to fear but it is still useful in fighting anxiety. A lot of things that stir up anxiety within us are the things outside of our control. In this verse, Paul explains to the Philippians that in any situation he can be content because God will give him the strength he needs. This means that whatever situation is you’re facing, even the ones out of your control, you can have peace of my mind by knowing God is your source of strength!
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: Cast Your Cares on Jesus
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5 :6-7 (CSB)
God cares about you. He cares when you’re feeling down and depressed. He cares when you’re feeling anxious and overcome with worry and he cares when you’re having a panic attack, struggling to breathe. God cares about you. Jesus cares so much for you that he willingly takes on every single one of your burdens so that you don’t have to bear them yourself!
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: You Can Be Confident During Adversity
“The Lord is my light and my salvation- whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life- whom should I dread? When evildoers come against me to devour my flesh, my foes and my enemies stumbled and fell. Though an army deploys against me, I will still be confident.” Psalm 27:1-3 (CSB)
I love this scripture for several reasons. First of all, it emphasizes that with God on your side you have nothing to fear. Even in the darkest moments God is going to be there to light your way. Second, it emphasizes that we can be confident in ALL situations because God is faithful!
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: God Can Bring Good From the Bad
“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8 :28 (CSB)
Though this scripture is often taken out of context ( a lot of people leave out the part where it says “those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.’), it is still so valuable to those who struggle with anxiety. If you love God and you are living according to His will, you can have full confidence that He is working ALL things for your good; even the things that have hurt you the most!
How to Overcome Anxiety With Scripture: God Will Provide
” But seek his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. Don’t be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. ” Luke 12:31-32 (CSB)
What a beautiful promise! Seek God’s kingdom- love for Him- and He will provide for you. There have been so many times that I have not asked God for something because it seemed too little or bothersome but this scripture assures us not only will God provide for you but He will delight in it; God enjoys giving to us!
Once again, I encourage you to become familiar with these scriptures. Memorize them, post them around your house where you can see them regularly, incorporate them into your prayers. God doesn’t want you to be weighed down and burdened by anxiety; He wants you living in freedom and peace. Most of all, remember you are never alone and God is fighting for you!
